There are lots of tales like that of An Roisin Dubb- The Black Rose. The Song, An RÓisín Dubh, is said to have originated in the camps of Red Hugh O'Donnel. Originally, the dark rose referred to the poet's beloved, but as the lyrics revolved between the 16th and 19th century, it came to represent Ireland. The intimate tone of the original carries over into the political song.
